My part in National Schools Film Week
At the end of October I found myself in one of the plush auditoriums in the Empire Leicester Square film theatre, London: although this time around I stood behind the lectern. At the request of the Hungarian Cultural Centre I volunteered to present a 90 minute screening of Hungarian animations from Kecskemétfilm, as part of the National Schools Film Week, for around a hundred primary school...

Little Lion in three languages
My latest picture book for Frances Lincoln, written by award-winning author Lesley Beake, has already picked up foreign co-editions. Little Lion is now available in three different languages: Danish, Swedish and English. The quirky and charming story was inspired by the tales of the Xam San ‘Bushmen’ of the Northern Cape in South Africa, first recorded by linguists Wilhelm Bleek and...

My Magic Mirror is featured in the Guardian
Thanks to the dedicated effort of Soapbox Events, Alien Nation @ Great Western Studios has been receiving steady media interest, but I wasn’t prepared to see myself in Tuesday’s Guardian! We took this photo on the shortest and possibly coldest day in December, in my living room. Because of the snowfalls, my delivery of special green paint was late, the exhibited final piece also...

Alien Nation: The Exhibition
Inspired by Hungarian born author, George Mikes’ book, and their own interpretation on “How To Be An Alien”, a group of high profile London based artists put this exciting and challenging exhibition together. I’m delighted to be part of the show, organized by Soapbox Events. I’ve created an interactive piece, inspired by fairground mirrors, for visitors to place...

Azad is in Scandinavia
The little hero of my first book seems to have hit it off with Northern Europe. After Danish and Swedish co-editions, the Norwegian publisher IKO-Forlaget has taken him on board. I would be delighted to see him in Finnish, not to mention magical Iceland - though the English edition is already doing well in the libraries there!

Exhibition In Space
This week I’m taking part in the annual exhibition of East London Printmakers, “ELP in Space”. I’ve recently discovered Japanese plywood as a wonderful surface for screenprinting onto. I’m currently exhibiting two prints at the Triangle gallery, which are also available for sale. More details here.

The Heart of Hackney!
One of my latest projects is called The Heart of Hackney, part of the Body Talk exhibition (June 1st to Aug 28th, Hackney Museum). I have created an animation of hearts, which is housed in a red fabric tent and projected onto the floor. The video sequence is made up from drawings and doodles of more than 100 Hackney citizens, collected by the wonderful Katja Rosenberg. The Heart beats till the end...

Drawing Inspiration
The exhibition is a display of original artwork from six titles shortlisted for the new Surrey Libraries’ Children’s Book Award as a part of their 2010 Children’s Book Festival. I am exhibiting four original artworks from “Night Flight” written by Michaela Morgan. Read an insightful review on Armadillo online. There will also be a fabulous display of drawings by the children who...

AOI Images 34 selection
I found a letter from the AOI buried beneath a 6 inch deep pile of pizza flyers – the postman doesn’t do stairs - informing me that my illustrations have been selected to be included in Images 34. Images 34 is the showcase for the best of contemporary British illustration, and the only independent, jury-selected illustration annual and touring exhibition in the UK. Looking forward to the fab...

In production
This month I’m putting the final touches to a book that teaches children about the Moon. (More details nearer to publication, 2010.) Basking in the Full Moon’s light, this owl is the meanest looking I’ve ever drawn. (detail) So many colours for a book that is almost entirely made up of night scenes! A detail from a jungle scene, ready for editing, is all I need to lighten up a dull, wet...

Tales From the Forest
I’m a bit of a wordsmith and got excited about a project that’s been initiated by a fellow printmaker to inspire people to express themselves by writing a fairytale. I’ve illustrated my Hungarian fairytale, “The Gingerbread Hussar” with a complementary lino print, kissed onto heavy Somerset paper by a cute Albion vintage press. I’ve a couple left for sale, contact me if...
